It’s time for THE PREMIER SCOUTING EVENT of the year – PINEWOOD DERBY!
This is one of our scouts’ most-anticipated events and also one of our most labor-intensive.
During the month of March, Pack 29 holds 3 derby-related events (see attached flyer for dates/times/locations) and we currently need adult volunteer support in order to run each individual event.
Please find our Volunteer Sign-Up Genius form here, and help us ensure our ability to run these events this year and well into the future.
Important Things to Know Before Beginning Work on Your Pinewood Derby Car
Pack 29 adheres to the Minsi Council Derby Rules. For a complete set of rules, check the backside of our Derby Events flyer. Top winners at the Pack-level are invited to participate at the Council event.
- Cars must weigh no more 5.0 ounces at Race Day check-in.
- Cars must maintain an overall length not to exceed 7 inches, including any decorative add-ons.
- Cars must clear the 3/8 inch guide strip on the track.
- Cars must use the axles and wheels found in the derby car build kit.
- All 4 wheels must make contact with the bottom of track surface.
- Review the attached flyer for additional rules.
- Cars will be reviewed for compliance during at Race Day check-in..
A Note about Wheel & Axle Installation
It’s easy to accidentally split the wood or otherwise damage the recessed cut for axles when inserting them.
Pack 29 has special axle jigs for pre-drilling the axle slots to avoid damage. We also have axle pliers for setting the axles at the correct depth, and ensuring a clean alignment.
Pack 29 will make these tools available at the Derby Build Day, and at the Derby Trial Night.
Axle pliers will be available on Race Day, but you should have your pre-drilling completed before the main event.
New this Year – Adult Competition
Following last year’s ground-breaking adult entry, we are officially opening the race to adult parents/guardians.
The adult race heat will take place after the traditional Scout derby, while results are reviewed and certificates prepared to be awarded.
If you need a car kit, please contact Cubmaster Mike Ehret.
